Dr Matos graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru. Initially dedicated to the delivery of Public Health to poor rural communities around the shanty towns of Lima, he migrated to Australia in 1996 to complete the Master of Public Health in the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
In 1999 he moved to the Gold Coast entering the Royal Australian of Physicians trainee Program at the Gold Coast Hospital, and then underwent Specialist training in Medical Oncology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, and Royal Brisbane Hospital in Brisbane and at the Gold Coast Hospital, finishing in 2009.
In 2010 he took a full time Medical Oncology Consultant position at the Gold Coast Hospital. He currently shares his time between his duties in the public Hospital and his private practice, providing high quality, and personalised outpatient and inpatient care to patients with solid organ malignancies.
Dr Matos is also committed to the teaching and training of advanced oncology trainees and undergraduate students from the Griffiths and Bond Universities. He is an active member of the numerous multidisciplinary oncology meetings in the Public and Private sectors.
In order to provide up to date care to his patients, Dr Matos is an active member of national and international organisations such as the American Society of Medical Oncology ASCO, European Society of Medical Oncology ESMO, the Medical Oncology Group of Medical Oncology MOGA, Australasian GastroIntestinal Trials Group AGITG, Australasian Lung Trials Group ALTG and the Australian and New Zealand Gynaecologic Oncology Group ANZGOG.
At a local level, Dr Matos is the founder of the monthly Gold Coast Cooperative Oncology Group meetings - integrating medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other specialist cancer care providers such as surgeons, respiratory physicians, pathologists, etc. He also belongs to the Gold Coast Medical Association.
Dr Matos has been the principal investigator of numerous Clinical Trials at the Gold Coast Hospital including the LIGHT trial (Phase III, randomised trial of linifanib versus sorafenib for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma), RAINBOW trial ( A phase III trial for patients with advanced gastric cancer who progressed after first line chemotherapy comparing paclitaxel vs paclitaxel and Ramucirumab, a vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor). The SIRFLOX and FOXFIRE trials (adding selective internal radiation therapy SIRT to standard first line FOLFOX chemotherapy +- bevacizumab for patients with unresectable liver metastasis from colorectal cancer). He is also co-investigator at many other clinical trials with Tasman Oncology Research at Pacific Private enrolling patients in trials for melanoma, urogenital and gastrointestinal malignancies.
Dr Matos is married with three children - Fiorella, Marco Isaac and Fernando. In his spare time enjoys gardening and sports, especially football.
