WATER SAFETY
Sunny days and warm weather means
more time spent in and around water –
pools, lakes, rivers, dams and beaches are
meccas for Australian kids, but they can
also be a hidden danger. According to the
Australian Bureau of Statistics, drowning
is the number one cause of accidental death
by injury for Australian children aged 1 to
4 years of age, with 1/3 of all drownings
in Australia occurring in summer. For this
age group, falls into water due to improper
supervision or inadequate restriction are
the main reasons these accidents occur.
These alarming statistics are why it is
so important for parents and carers to be
especially vigilant about water safety. The
Northern Territory Water Safety Awareness
Program developed by Royal Life Saving
Australia (NT division) suggests four key
elements in keeping your kids safe in and
around water.
Supervision
Restricting access
Water familiarisation
