Most people know about the four C’s of
diamonds - carat-weight, colour, clarity,
and cut - but there is another which
in many respects is more important
– confidence. If you are outlaying money for a valuable
jewel, do you have confidence in the person selling that
precious gem? At 5th Avenue Jewellers that comes in the
form of Nicole and Darren Daley, who’s qualifications and
experience mean that you can relax knowing that you are in
the safest of hands.
Nicole is the daughter of the business founders,
Bill and Pamela Hannaford, and has virtually grown
up surrounded by jewellery. Determined to learn as
much as she could about the business she embarked
on a rigorous round of study and became a highly
qualified gemmologist. Constantly updating her skills
and knowledge, her major concern is learning about
the many synthetic stones and how to recognise them.
“People constantly tell me that they have purchased
something on-line which worries me enormously but
you need the kind of specialised testing equipment we
have here to ascertain if it is a real stone or not,” she
explained. It is a caution worth heeding because what
looks like a great deal can often turn out to be a fracture
filled Diamond or a synthetic Gemstone.
She also is rightly proud of her own range of designs –
Ti Amo. The name means ‘I love you’ in Italian and came
from her father’s habit of leaving handwritten gifts and
a note to his beloved wife Pamela with those two words.
They are truly original - every piece is a one-off, designed
and manufactured in house and no piece is ever repeated.
Nicole’s husband Darren is one of the most qualified
gemmologists and Registered Valuers in the country. In
addition he is a highly skilled, manufacturing jeweller,
with additional qualifications in the areas of Diamond
Technology and Advanced Diamond Grading and has
been a teacher, demonstrator and examiner of each of
these courses for many years. He is also an avid user of
the 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) system. Anyone
who wants a custom made piece can see what they will be
getting before the process of manufacturing begins. Due
to the wonders of modern technology Darren can take the
dimensions of any stone and very quickly produce a 3D
image of his or Nicole’s design to enable the customer to
see what their piece will look like.
Knowledge, experience and good old-fashioned
customer service are the corner stones of 5th Avenue
Jewellers. A family business that has built an enviable
reputation which in turn keeps a steady stream of loyal
and new customers returning to the Capri on Via Roma
store on the Isle of Capri.
