FROM THE CEO
Welcome to the latest edition of the
Pindara Magazine. The year seems
to be flying by once again, with lots
happening at the hospital.
Pindara was proud to be the first hospital on the
Gold Coast to purchase new Stryker AIM 1588
technology. This ground-breaking laparoscopic
equipment uses infra-red illumination and
military grade visualisation to help guide
surgeons through procedures, increasing
accuracy and reducing surgery length.
In keeping with our goal to provide our patients
with the best services possible, we have recently
completed a number of new projects, including
the opening of a brand new Renal Unit and
the confirmation of a new fee structure in the
Emergency Department.
Once part of the Day Infusion Centre, the
Renal Unit now has its own home on level one
of the hospital. The Unit has doubled in size,
increasing to a six chair capacity. The space
is open, light and airy and has been furnished
with new recliner chairs and TV’s for patient
comfort. The Renal Unit is also fitted with the
latest Fresenius dialysis equipment; ensuring
patients receive the best treatment possible. Our
new increase in capacity also means we can now
offer our services to holiday patients who require
treatment during their stay on the Gold Coast.
Pindara’s Emergency Department, the longest
standing Private ED on the Gold Coast, has

recently changed its fee structure to make
the process clearer and more streamlined for
presenting patients. The changes include a fixed
fee structure and Medicare rebates performed
on-site so patients know what they can expect to
pay before treatment.
In keeping with advancements in our health
services, our Day Infusion Centre is now offering
patients ‘scalp cooling’ therapy - a treatment that
can be used when first starting chemotherapy
in order to help reduce hair loss. While the
treatment has been used overseas for a number of
years, it is relatively new to Australia, with only
a small number of hospitals offering it, mostly in
the private sector. The treatment offers promising
results for patients distressed about the prospect
of losing their hair during treatment.
At Pindara Maternity we know that families are
made in lots of different ways and in this edition
there is a beautiful story of two family’s journey
through surrogacy. We also talk to Coolangatta
Gold Champion Hayley Bateup and her partner
April about life with two young boys. Our
Maternity gardens, adjacent to our birth suites are
complete, creating a tranquil modern space where
mothers can relax.
I look forward to sharing more news from the
Pindara Group of Hospitals in our next edition.
