OUR PREGNANCY
HAYLEY & APRIL
BATEUP journey:
1. When did you decide to try for a second baby? What influenced your decision?
Originally we only ever thought we would have one child, but after having Baxter we loved
him and the experience so much that we wanted to give him a sibling and experience the
beautiful feeling of having another child again. We decided that we wanted to do it sooner
rather than later so they were close in age. Once Baxter was about one we started the process
again. We were so lucky to have such a great doctor in Michael Flynn to facilitate us and give
us two beautiful boys.
2. Did you need to do a second round of IVF? If so was it a hard decision to do it again?
We were lucky that we didn’t have to do another round of egg retrieval, as we still had
remaining fertilised eggs. After a few implantations (we were actually down to our last egg)
we were excited to have baby Banks.
3. How long did you wait to see if the egg had taken? Did you wait the required
amount of time or did you do a sneaky pregnancy test?
We had a few eggs not take before Banks, where we had done pregnancy tests. By Banks, we
actually waited for the test to come back as we were always guessing and thinking we were
pregnant, so by this time we thought what will be, will be...and what will be was an awesome
surprise!
4. Was the pregnancy with Banks different at all from the pregnancy with Baxter?
Harder? Easier?
The pregnancy itself was almost identical to Baxter, which was really nice as April actually
felt better than she normally would. The only thing she found hard was that we now had an
18month old that she had to chase around.
5. How did you share the news with Baxter that he was going to be a big brother?
We prepared him just by telling him. He loves his little brother so much. Banks is the first thing
Baxter asks about when he wakes up in the morning. ‘Where’s Little Danksie?’ he says.
6. How did you prepare for baby number two? Was your preparation different to the
first time around?
We are always pretty healthy, so there wasn’t too much we needed to change. We made sure
we were eating well, reducing alcohol down to only the occasional drink and continuing
exercise, taking folic acid and pregnancy supplements. Hayley trains a lot of pregnant women
at Hayley Bateup’s Body Blitz, so she kept me in shape while making sure that all exercise
was safe for the baby.
7. What was your experience of birth like with your second baby? Was it pretty much
the same as the first or different?
The birth of Banks was quicker, but more intense. Banks was induced; whereas Baxter’s
labour occured naturally. Bank’s birth was really full on for April, but we were well cared for
and had lots of laughs. It was a beautiful experience and we were looked after so well.
8. What is the hardest thing about being pregnant and having a toddler to look after?
Shopping! This was and still is the most difficult and hectic! So many distractions for a
2-year-old at the shops; so it’s crazy chasing him around with a trolley and baby in tow.
