FIRSTLY, WHAT IS INFLUENZA? Influenza, or ‘the flu’, is a highly contagious acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. There are three main types of influenza viruses that cause infection in humans - types A, B and C. Influenza is not the same as the common cold. While a common cold is considered quite mild - people’s immune systems are able to fight it off within a few days without any intervention - influenza can be a dangerous illness, regardless of age. Young and healthy people can take up to two weeks or more to fully recover, and those 65 and older are in the high-risk group. pindaramagazine.com.au Pindara Magazine 15
