Trave l BIG SPENDER It’s called the Magnificent Mile, and with good reason, for you’ll find any brand or bag you’re searching for somewhere in the city’s primary shopping strip. Department stores, luxury boutiques and high street stores call this haven of retail therapy home, and the opportunities to spend, regardless of budget, are endless. Those searching for one offs at the bespoke end of the spectrum must make for the concept store Ikram, where effortless service and a hand selected edit of the finest brands await. Those with an appreciation of kitchen orientated goods, should look no further than the emporium that is EATALY. Dedicated to Hemingway (an avid eater), it’s the second store for the USA, and the two floors are filled with premium Italian sourced small goods, wines and pantry staples. Fresh produce abounds and those truly into their food, will be transfixed. EAT UP For the iconic diner, look to Lou Mitchells. From 1923 this institution has been serving dishes cooked with generosity and served with warmth by staff who will be calling you ‘sugar’ in no time. You’ll be hard pressed to finish their pan omelettes with potato hash, so too the piles of waffles. If an American feast of smoked meats from brisket to ribs is your hankering, Green Street Meats is a must. It draws a crowd, and sitting in their communal eating hall, feasting from grease paper lined trays, licking the fingers and sipping on southern style cocktails makes for an excellent night. So too Mott Street. Reservations for Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard’s Girl and The Goat in the West Randolph Street dining precinct book out weeks in advance, so if you’re hoping to spend a night feasting on her much celebrated fare, it’s best you secure yours online with the reservation service, Open Table. Across the road you’ll find her walk-in diner and bakery, Little Goat, where creative comfort cooking reigns. The sandwiches will fill even the most famished of eaters, as will those from Publican Quality Meats where house cured and roasted meats are celebrated. With starters like chicken livers on buttered brioche, bacon add-ons the size of pork chops, and single burgers featuring two beef patties, odds are Au Cheval will be the most indulgent eatery you’ll visit. Flavour and fat is the mantra, but the execution is refined. It’s a tricky juxtaposition. Oh, and ordering the Hemingway daiquiri is not debatable.
