Trave l Everest Basecamp achieved! It was such a beautiful trek – for the first few days I walked with a British couple (Ben and Rita) through gorgeous green pine forests, past roaring rivers and a million pray wheels, and across screamingly scary, high suspension bridges, while all around us were the majestic snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, looking down on us and watching ... Day one had us staying in a gorgeous little town, named Phakding, set by a roaring river. It is a really beautiful place with gorgeous Nepalese kids running around saying “namaste” to you as you passed by! The second day had us hiking uphill. What a great workout day! I crossed the highest suspension bridge I have ever seen, before arriving in Namche for our second night. At 3,440 metres, Namche is situated so high in the mountains, the mountains surrounding it, look like the floating ones in Avatar! An amazing place, with lots to see and beautiful Tibetan and Nepalese people to meet! We stayed here for two nights. This meant we did a full day trek in between that took us up higher and then back down in an effort to acclimatise us. We saw our best views of Everest this day. It was looming in the background. The next day, we set off for Tengboche, a town set even higher in the mountains. At 3,840 metres high, this place was magical. It was dominated by an amazing Buddhist monastery and as you walked through the pillars, to your left was the monastery but directly in front was a valley, and beyond that was Everest shining high in the distance directly ahead! Even though we had now climbed quite high, the mountains still totally surrounded and overlooked us. Words fail to describe the vibe of this place - it was quite simply, and without exaggeration, beyond description! valley close to phakding suspension bridge between jorsale and namche bazar 64 Pindara Magazine Autumn 2015
