HOME STEP ONE CUT THE CLU TTER This step is best done when the kids are not home. Sort through the toys and create three piles: toys to keep, broken toys to throw away, and toys that are still in good condition that no longer get played with. You can donate these toys to a local charity to pass on to kids less fortunate than your own, or you can sell them at a garage sale and use the money to fund the new and improved play room. STEP TWO RE FRE SH THE FURNI TURE Give your existing toy storage a fresh new look with a few coats of paint. Sand away any nasty spots and then paint with one coat of primer. Ours was easily and quickly applied with a paint roller, and any little corners and tight spots were touched up with a small brush. Allow the primer to thoroughly dry and then paint with two coats of your colour of choice. We used two sample pots to paint four pieces of furniture. STEP THREE CRE ATE A FEATURE WALL Removable wall decals are a fun and inexpensive way to create a feature wall that will take your play room from drab to fab! We chose these ultra cute pineapples and polka dots from Vivid Wall Decals (www.vividwalldecals. com.au) to create a ‘food theme’ to showcase the existing play café and kitchen furniture. Easy to apply and remove, these wall decals are perfect for renters and are affordable enough that you can change the theme of the feature wall as your child/children grow. Personalise the feature wall with your child’s/ children’s name. We absolutely adore these Tasmanian Oak floating type name plates from Louie Luxe (www.louieluxe.com), and they are even more gorgeous in real life than they are in print. STEP FOUR REARANGE & REOR GANI SE Move the furniture and play equipment around to give the appearance of a whole new room. Create specific play zones such as a reading nook, art station, and home corner for creative role play. This will help keep things much tidier on a daily basis, as each zone houses its respective toys. Use a tension rod (available from any good hardware store), mounted between furniture or against a wall and piece of furniture to display dress ups. This keeps the clothes clean and organised, and also makes them much more accessible for little ones. Display dolls or action figures in an overthe door shoe organiser (available from most department stores or specialty stores such as Howard’s Storage World). Not only does this make it much more organised, it saves space as well. pm pindaramagazine.com.au Pindara Magazine 89
