Trave l THE COOL CHARM OF CHICAGO It’s easy to be swept away by the Windy City. You’ve got it all – that major metropolis beat, warm hospitality from the surrounding Midwest and offerings of both the established and esteemed, and organic and emerging. It’s a mix, and it’s just right. For no matter the tourists’ tastes, Chicago is a city that delivers against the bustle of New York, cool of California and glam of Las Vegas, making it the latest hot spot for American vacations. Not to mention that embedded sporting culture running passionately throughout all codes, no matter the season. You might say the city’s strength is due to a current environment that’s the work of two highly different generations. Time and taste never would have them meet, but as the years have passed, their independent and opposing efforts have created a combination of virtues valued by holidaymakers. It stemmed from the 1800s when, as a hub for transport and finance, Chicago had the money. Decision makers and heavyweights called it home, and the finer things flowed. It was the birthplace to greats like Ernest Hemingway, and references both to the people, the trends and all Chicago enjoyed and endured runs throughout the city. There’s a strong nod to an esteemed era, and speaks of what was seen to be a glamorous, refined time - whether legitimately funded or not. The characters influencing today’s scene - best described as hipster - are a generation that over moving to the seemingly ‘cooler’ and alluring cities of their nation, have stayed put. Unlike others before, who packed and left, they’ve created industries in their hometown – of which appeal both to locals and visitors, and boast a distinctive flair that rivals those they previously would have set out to join. 74 Pindara Magazine Autumn 2015
