New Hope for Old Knees New injectable therapy providing relief for knee osteoarthritis sufferers Unfortunately for patients with knee osteoarthritis, managing an arthritic knee prior to joint replacement is a frustrating process. Osteoarthritis pain can fluctuate from mild to moderate pain for many years, with a gradual worsening over time. Many over-thecounter treatments such as glucosamine, chondroitin or krill oil have inconclusive or no scientifically proven benefit. In addition, multiple studies have shown that arthroscopy does not benefit patients with osteoarthritis as their primary complaint. Over the last 18 months, increasing evidence supporting the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for knee osteoarthritis has led to its increasing popularity. Multiple Level 1 & 2 randomised clinical trials have shown superiority of PRP intra-injections over a variety of controls including placebo, Synvisc (Hyluronronic Acid) and intraarticular steroids.
